What the Critics Say
McDermot gets a lot of play from those funk enthusiasts who think the more obscure and unlikely an artist, the more funky he's apt to be. It's just not the case. Sure, he banged out the soundtracks to a bunch of blaxploitation movies, but that alone won't bless one with the funk. That being said, this stuff ain't bad. Sure he bangs the keys like he's got something against them, and nobody anywhere could really say this swings, but it does have a charm. The songs are catchy, the playing is earnest, and all of it is eminently listenable. Those who are into the cop music or soundtrack scene, here's something new to dig. If not, buy a Curtis Mayfield record. ~ Rob Ferrier, All Music Guide
