What the Critics Say

Herbie Nichols was one of the tragedies of jazz, a very original pianist and composer who could not find regular employment for his thought-provoking music and ended up playing in anonymous Dixieland bands. He only recorded three complete albums as a leader, and his Bethlehem date was his last. With perfectly suitable accompaniment from bassist George Duvivier and bassist Danny Richmond, Nichols introduces nine of his originals, in addition to performing the standard "Too Close for Comfort." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
